Chapter 2 — The original verses of the 45 devtas
The 45 devtas tabled in chapter 1 are here in the words of the texts they come from — Varāhamihira's Bṛhat Saṁhitā (the Vāstuvidyā chapter) and the Matsya Purāṇa (chapter 253). Under each verse is its meaning in plain English, and in Hindi. The translations are ours; the Sanskrit is as the text has it.
A. Bṛhat Saṁhitā — 81 padas and 45 devtas
एकाशीतिविभागे दश दश पूर्वोत्तरायता रेखाः ।
अन्तस्त्रयोदश सुरा द्वात्रिंशद्बाह्यकोष्ठस्थाः ॥
Meaning: In the division into eighty-one squares, ten lines run east–west and ten north–south. Thirteen gods are within; thirty-two occupy the outer squares.
हिंदी: इक्यासी पदों के विभाग में पूर्व-पश्चिम और उत्तर-दक्षिण दस-दस रेखाएँ खींची जाती हैं। भीतर तेरह देवता हैं और बत्तीस देवता बाहरी कोष्ठों में।
शिखिपर्जन्यजयन्तैन्द्रसूर्यसत्या भृशोऽन्तरिक्षश्च ।
ऐशान्यादिक्रमशो दक्षिणपूर्वेऽनिलः कोणे ॥
Meaning: Beginning at the north-east corner, in order: Shikhi (Agni), Parjanya, Jayanta, Indra, Surya, Satya, Bhrisha and Antariksha; then Anila (the wind) in the south-east corner.
हिंदी: ईशान कोण से क्रम से — शिखी (अग्नि), पर्जन्य, जयन्त, इन्द्र, सूर्य, सत्य, भृश और अन्तरिक्ष; फिर आग्नेय (दक्षिण-पूर्व) कोण में अनिल (वायु)।
पूषा वितथबृहत्क्षतयमगन्धर्वाख्यभृङ्गराजमृगाः ।
पितृदौवारिकसुग्रीवकुसुमदन्ताम्बुपत्यसुराः ॥
Meaning: (South) Pusha, Vitatha, Brihatkshata (Grihakshata), Yama, Gandharva, Bhringaraja, Mriga; (West) the Pitris, Dauvarika, Sugriva, Kusumadanta (Pushpadanta), Ambupati (Varuna) and Asura.
हिंदी: (दक्षिण में) पूषा, वितथ, बृहत्क्षत (गृहक्षत), यम, गन्धर्व, भृङ्गराज, मृग; (पश्चिम में) पितृ, दौवारिक, सुग्रीव, कुसुमदन्त (पुष्पदन्त), अम्बुपति (वरुण) और असुर।
Brihatkshata and Kusumadanta are the ones the Matsya Purāṇa calls Grihakshata and Pushpadanta.
शोषोऽथ पापयक्ष्मा रोगः कोणे ततोऽहिमुख्यौ च ।
भल्लाटसोमभुजगास्ततोऽदितिर्दितिरिति क्रमशः ॥
Meaning: Then Shosha, Papayakshma, and Roga in the north-west corner; after them Ahi (the serpent) and Mukhya; then Bhallata, Soma, Bhujaga, and in order Aditi and Diti.
हिंदी: फिर शोष, पापयक्ष्मा, और वायव्य कोण में रोग; उसके बाद अहि (नाग) और मुख्य; फिर भल्लाट, सोम, भुजग, और क्रम से अदिति और दिति।
मध्ये ब्रह्मा नवकोष्ठकाधिपोऽस्यार्यमा स्थितः प्राच्याम् ।

Meaning: In the middle is Brahma, lord of nine squares; to his east stands Aryaman; from him, leaving one square each time in clockwise order, Savita and Vivasvan.
हिंदी: बीच में नौ कोष्ठों के स्वामी ब्रह्मा हैं; उनके पूर्व में अर्यमा है; उससे एक-एक पद छोड़कर प्रदक्षिणा-क्रम में सविता और विवस्वान।
विबुधाधिपतिस्तस्मान्मित्रोऽन्यो राजयक्ष्मनामा च ।
पृथिवीधरापवत्सावित्येते ब्रह्मणः परिधौ ॥
Meaning: Then the lord of the gods (Indra), Mitra, the one named Rajayakshma, Prithvidhara and Apavatsa — these stand around Brahma.
हिंदी: उसके बाद विबुधाधिपति (इन्द्र), मित्र, फिर राजयक्ष्मा नामक देवता, पृथिवीधर और आपवत्स — ये ब्रह्मा के घेरे में हैं।
आपो नामैशाने कोणे हौताशने च सावित्रः ।
जय इति च नैरृते रुद्र आनिलेऽभ्यन्तरपदेषु ॥
Meaning: In the inner squares: Apa in the north-east corner, Savitra in the south-east, Jaya in the south-west and Rudra in the north-west.
हिंदी: भीतरी पदों में — ईशान कोण में आप, आग्नेय में सावित्र, नैर्ऋत्य में जय और वायव्य में रुद्र।
आपस्तथापवत्सः पर्जन्योऽग्निर्दितिश्च वर्गोऽयम् ।
एवं कोणे कोणे पदिकाः स्युः पञ्च पञ्च सुराः ॥
Meaning: Apa, Apavatsa, Parjanya, Agni and Diti — this is the group of the north-east corner. In the same way each corner has five gods of one square each.
हिंदी: आप, आपवत्स, पर्जन्य, अग्नि और दिति — यह ईशान कोण का वर्ग है। इसी तरह हर कोण में एक-एक पद वाले पाँच-पाँच देवता होते हैं।
बाह्या द्विपदाः शेषास्ते विबुधा विंशति समाख्याताः ।
शेषाश्चत्वारोऽन्ये त्रिपदा दिक्ष्वर्यमाद्यास्ते ॥
Meaning: The remaining twenty outer gods hold two squares each; the other four — Aryaman and his peers in the four directions — hold three squares each.
हिंदी: बाकी बाहरी बीस देवता दो-दो पद के कहे गए हैं; शेष चार — अर्यमा आदि — चारों दिशाओं में तीन-तीन पद के हैं।
B. Bṛhat Saṁhitā — the devtas on the limbs of the Vastu Purusha
These verses say which devta lies on which limb of the Purusha who lies face down across the plan — this is where the ideas of "marma" (vital points) and "shalya" (buried obstructions) come from.
पूर्वोत्तरदिग्मूर्धा पुरुषोऽयमवाङ्मुखोऽस्य शिरसि शिखी ।
आपो मुखे स्तनेऽस्यार्यमा ह्युरस्यापवत्सश्च ॥
Meaning: This Purusha lies face down with his head towards the north-east. On his head is Shikhi, on his mouth Apa, on his breast Aryaman and on his chest Apavatsa.
हिंदी: यह वास्तुपुरुष ईशान की ओर सिर किए, मुँह नीचे किए लेटा है। इसके सिर पर शिखी, मुख पर आप, स्तन पर अर्यमा और छाती पर आपवत्स हैं।
पर्जन्याद्या बाह्या दृक्श्रवणोरःस्थलांसगा देवाः ।
सत्याद्याः पञ्च भुजे हस्ते सविता च सावित्रः ॥
Meaning: Parjanya and the outer gods after him are on the eyes, ears, chest and shoulders; Satya and the next four on the arm; Savita and Savitra on the hand.
हिंदी: पर्जन्य आदि बाहरी देवता आँख, कान, छाती और कंधे पर हैं; सत्य आदि पाँच भुजा पर, और सविता तथा सावित्र हाथ पर।
वितथो बृहत्क्षतयुतः पार्श्वे जठरे स्थितो विवस्वांश्च ।
ऊरू जानु च जङ्घे स्फिगिति यमाद्यैः परिगृहीताः ॥
Meaning: Vitatha with Brihatkshata on the side, Vivasvan in the belly; the thigh, the knee, the shin and the hip are held by Yama and those after him.
हिंदी: वितथ और बृहत्क्षत बगल में, विवस्वान पेट में; जाँघ, घुटना, पिंडली और नितम्ब पर यम आदि देवता हैं।
एते दक्षिणपार्श्वे स्थानेष्वेवं च वामपार्श्वस्थाः ।
मेढ्रे शक्रजयन्तौ हृदये ब्रह्मा पितांघ्रिगतः ॥
Meaning: These are the places on the right side; the left side is the same. On the organ are Indra and Jayanta, in the heart Brahma, and the Pitris at the feet.
हिंदी: ये दाहिनी ओर के स्थान हैं; बाईं ओर भी इसी क्रम से देवता हैं। लिंग-स्थान पर इन्द्र और जयन्त, हृदय में ब्रह्मा, और पैरों में पितृ।
C. Matsya Purāṇa — the same 45 in the Purāṇa's words
Chapter 253 of the Matsya Purāṇa gives the same list in verse. The count is explicit: "triṁśat pañcadaśa" = 45 — thirty-two outside, thirteen within.
सर्ववास्तुविभागेषु विज्ञेया नवका नव ।
एकाशीतिपदं कृत्वा वास्तुवित्सर्ववास्तुषु ॥
Meaning: In every division of a site, nine groups of nine are to be known; the knower of Vastu makes eighty-one squares in every building.
हिंदी: सब वास्तु-विभागों में नौ-नौ के नौ खंड जानने चाहिए; वास्तुवेत्ता हर वास्तु में इक्यासी पद बनाकर (पूजा करे)।
पदस्थान् पूजयेद्देवांस्त्रिंशत्पञ्चदशैव तु ।
द्वात्रिंशद्बाह्यतः पूज्याः पूज्याश्चान्तस्त्रयोदश ॥
Meaning: Let him worship the forty-five gods seated in the squares — thirty-two are to be worshipped outside and thirteen within.
हिंदी: पदों में स्थित पैंतालीस देवताओं की पूजा करे — बत्तीस बाहर पूज्य हैं और तेरह भीतर।
नामतस्तान् प्रवक्ष्यामि स्थानानि च निबोधत ।
ईशानकोणादिषु तान् पूजयेद्धविषा नरः ॥
Meaning: I shall tell their names and places, listen; beginning from the north-east corner, let a man worship them with offerings.
हिंदी: उनके नाम और स्थान कहता हूँ, सुनो; ईशान कोण से आरम्भ करके मनुष्य हवि से उनकी पूजा करे।
शिखी चैवाथ पर्जन्यो जयन्तः कुलिशायुधः ।
सूर्यसत्यौ भृशश्चैव आकाशो वायुरेव च ॥
Meaning: Shikhi, Parjanya, Jayanta, the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra), Surya, Satya, Bhrisha, Akasha (Antariksha) and Vayu.
हिंदी: शिखी, पर्जन्य, जयन्त, कुलिशायुध (वज्रधारी इन्द्र), सूर्य, सत्य, भृश, आकाश और वायु।
पूषा च वितथश्चैव गृहक्षतयमावुभौ ।
गन्धर्वो भृङ्गराजश्च मृगः पितृगणस्तथा ॥
Meaning: Pusha, Vitatha, both Grihakshata and Yama, Gandharva, Bhringaraja, Mriga and the host of Pitris.
हिंदी: पूषा, वितथ, गृहक्षत और यम दोनों, गन्धर्व, भृङ्गराज, मृग और पितृगण।
दौवारिकोऽथ सुग्रीवः पुष्पदन्तो जलाधिपः ।
असुरः शोषपापौ च रोगोऽहिर्मुख्य एव च ॥
Meaning: Dauvarika, Sugriva, Pushpadanta, the lord of waters (Varuna), Asura, Shosha and Papa(yakshma), Roga, Ahi and Mukhya.
हिंदी: दौवारिक, सुग्रीव, पुष्पदन्त, जलाधिप (वरुण), असुर, शोष और पाप(यक्ष्मा), रोग, अहि और मुख्य।
The Wikisource text prints “सोषपाणौ” and “रोगो हिर्मुख्य” — a transcription slip; the standard reading is “शोषपापौ” and “रोगोऽहिर्मुख्य”, which matches Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.45.
भल्लाटः सोमसर्पौ च अदितिश्च दितिस्तथा ।
बहिर्द्वात्रिंशदेते तु तदन्तस्तु ततः शृणु ॥
Meaning: Bhallata, Soma, Sarpa, Aditi and Diti — these thirty-two are outside; now hear those within.
हिंदी: भल्लाट, सोम, सर्प, अदिति और दिति — ये बत्तीस बाहर हैं; अब भीतर के देवता सुनो।
ईशानादिचतुष्कोणसंस्थितान् पूजयेद्बुधः ।
आपश्चैवाथ सावित्रो जयो रुद्रस्तथैव च ॥
Meaning: The wise one worships those seated in the four corners beginning with the north-east: Apa, Savitra, Jaya and Rudra.
हिंदी: ईशान आदि चारों कोणों में स्थित आप, सावित्र, जय और रुद्र की बुद्धिमान पूजा करे।
मध्ये नवपदे ब्रह्मा तस्याष्टौ च समीपगान् ।
साध्यानेकान्तरान् विद्यात्पूर्वाद्यान्नामतः शृणु ॥
Meaning: In the nine central squares is Brahma; near him, at intervals of one square, beginning from the east, are eight Sadhya gods — hear their names.
हिंदी: बीच के नौ पदों में ब्रह्मा; उनके समीप, एक-एक पद के अंतर से, पूर्व से क्रम में आठ साध्य देवता हैं — उनके नाम सुनो।
अर्यमा सविता चैव विवस्वान् विबुधाधिपः ।
मित्रोऽथ राजयक्ष्मा च तथा पृथ्वीधरः स्मृतः ॥
Meaning: Aryaman, Savita, Vivasvan, the lord of the gods (Indra), Mitra, Rajayakshma and Prithvidhara.
हिंदी: अर्यमा, सविता, विवस्वान, विबुधाधिप (इन्द्र), मित्र, राजयक्ष्मा और पृथ्वीधर।
अष्टमश्चापवत्सस्तु परितो ब्रह्मणः स्मृतः ।
आपश्चैवापवत्सश्च पर्जन्योऽग्निर्दितिस्तथा ॥
Meaning: The eighth is Apavatsa — these eight are said to surround Brahma. (And the group of the north-east corner:) Apa, Apavatsa, Parjanya, Agni and Diti.
हिंदी: आठवाँ आपवत्स — ये आठ ब्रह्मा के चारों ओर कहे गए हैं। (और ईशान कोण का वर्ग:) आप, आपवत्स, पर्जन्य, अग्नि और दिति।
Both texts say the same thing
- 32 outside, 13 within — in both (Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.42, Matsya 253.22).
- The count starts at the north-east with Shikhi and ends clockwise at Diti — in both.
- The names differ only as synonyms: Brihatkshata = Grihakshata, Kusumadanta = Pushpadanta, Ambupati = Jaladhipa = Varuna, Antariksha = Akasha, Anila = Vayu, Bhujaga = Sarpa, Ahi = Naga.

Frequently Asked Questions
In which chapter of the Bṛhat Saṁhitā are the Vastu devta verses?
In the Vāstuvidyā chapter — chapter 52 (verses 42–54) in the Wikisource text, chapter 53 in the Sudhākara Dvivedī and Ramakrishna Bhat editions. The verses are the same.
Where is the list of the 45 Vastu devtas in the Matsya Purāṇa?
Chapter 253, verses 21 to 31 — first the 32 outer devtas (253.24–27), then the 13 inner ones (253.28–31).
Are these translations taken from a published book?
No. The Sanskrit is the text's; the Hindi and English meanings are Vastuguruji's own, in plain words. For depth, see Bhaṭṭotpala's commentary (Dvivedī edition).
