Chapter 4 — Door results: what a main door gives on each devta's pada

The main door falls on one pada of the mandala's outer ring, and the devta of that pada decides what the door gives. The Bṛhat Saṁhitā gives the result for all 32 padas in four verses, one word each — starting with Shikhi in the east and going clockwise to Diti in the north. Below: the verses first, then the table of 32 padas, then the general faults of a door.

The eight auspicious padas: in the east Jayanta (E3) and Indra (E4), in the south Grihakshata (S4), in the west Pushpadanta (W4) and Varuna (W5), in the north Mukhya (N3), Bhallata (N4) and Soma (N5). On the other 24 the door's result is said to be inauspicious. The middle padas of each side are good, the ones near the corners are not — that is the whole of it.

C. General faults of a door — the same chapter

Besides the pada, the make of the door and what stands in front of it also have their results. Some verses:

— Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.74

Meaning: A door struck (in line) by a road, a tree, a corner, a well, a pillar or a mill is inauspicious; but if a distance of twice the door's height is left, there is no fault.

— Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.75

Meaning: A door pierced by a street brings ruin; by a tree, harm to the children; a muddy door brings grief, and one from which water drains away, expense.

— Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.76

Meaning: Pierced by a well, the door brings epilepsy; by a shrine, destruction; by a pillar, faults among the women; and facing a Brahmin's house, ruin of the family.

— Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.77

Meaning: A door that opens by itself brings madness; one that shuts by itself, ruin of the family; a door larger than the measure brings fear of the king; a low one, fear of robbers and misfortune.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which padas are auspicious for the main door in Vastu?

According to Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52.70–73, eight: Jayanta (E3), Indra (E4), Grihakshata (S4), Pushpadanta (W4), Varuna (W5), Mukhya (N3), Bhallata (N4) and Soma (N5) — the middle padas of each side.

In which text are the door results given?

In the Vāstuvidyā chapter of Varāhamihira's Bṛhat Saṁhitā (52.69–79 in the Wikisource text, 53 in the Dvivedī/Bhat editions). The Viśvakarma Prakāśa and the Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra also treat doors.

If my door is on an inauspicious pada, must it be broken?

No. First confirm the measurement — doors often sit on a boundary. Then check the 'viddha' faults and the distance rule. Remedies exist without demolition; that is what a consultation decides.
