Chapter 1 — 45 Vastu Devtas = 45 Powers
The 45 devtas of the Vastu Purusha Mandala are not 45 idols. Each is one power at work in a house or an office — one brings customers, one keeps discipline, one holds things back. When the place where that power sits is disturbed, that very work goes wrong. Below is each devta's work in one line, then — plainly — what in this is scripture and what is today's interpretation, and at the end the Sanskrit texts where all of it is written.
The 45 devtas and their powers
The order 1–45 runs from the centre of the mandala outwards: the centre, then the four long devtas of the four sides, then the inner eight, then the 32 of the outer ring (clockwise from East). "door auspicious" = a main door on this pada is held auspicious.

Tapping a devta opens its card in chapter 5 — pada, limb, remedy and Field Booster.
What scripture says, and what is interpretation
The two must be kept apart, or a reader comes to think all of it is written in the texts. It is not.
✅ This is written in scripture
- The names and padas of the 45 devtas — the outer 32 from Shikhi to Diti, the 12 within, Brahma at the centre (Bṛhat Saṁhitā 52/53, Matsya Purāṇa 253, Mayamata 7, Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra 11–14).
- Door results — on which pada a main door is auspicious and on which not (Bṛhat Saṁhitā, Viśvakarma Prakāśa).
- Aditi is the mother of the twelve Ādityas and Diti her sister (Ṛgveda 10.72, Bhāgavata 6.6, Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.15).
- Aditi is the goddess of the Punarvasu nakshatra (Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa 3.1.1).
- Shikhi = Agni; Parjanya = the rain god (Ṛgveda 5.83) — so "fertiliser" sits well.
🟡 This is modern interpretation
- The job names — "Visionary", "Merchandiser", "Grinder" — are in no text; they are the manner of today's Vastu teaching, which the table above gives in our own words.
- The Āditya / Rudra / Vasu / asura grouping that many charts give — the scriptural twelve Ādityas include Bhaga, Tvaṣṭā, Dhātā, Vidhātā, Aṁśa and Viṣṇu; Yama and Mukhya are not Ādityas. Take the group as a hint, not as proof.
- Each devta's element and guṇa–doṣa percentage, and a "field" arising from metals or materials — interpretation and experience, not scripture.
- Plastic idols awakening asuric tendencies, nylon threads affecting the arteries — these are health claims with no textual or medical basis. The cotton kalāvā tradition itself is old.
The original verses, with translations, are in the next chapters:Chapter 2 — the original verses · Chapter 3 — Aditi, Diti, the Ādityas, Rudra · Chapter 4 — door results
Which Sanskrit books to read
For the mandala and its devtas, these two first:
- Bṛhat Saṁhitā of Varāhamihira, the Vāstuvidyā chapter (52 or 53 by edition) — the oldest complete list of the 45 devtas, and the door results. Sanskrit with Hindi: Acyutānanda Jhā (Chowkhamba). Sanskrit with English: M. Ramakrishna Bhat (Motilal, 2 vols). With Bhaṭṭotpala's commentary: the Sudhākara Dvivedī edition.
- Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra of King Bhoja, chapters 11–14 — the fullest treatment of the pada-devatās. Sanskrit–English: Sudarshan Kumar Sharma (Parimal).
Then, in order of usefulness:
- Matsya Purāṇa chapters 252–257 (253 has the list of devtas) — Gita Press has a Hindi translation.
- Mayamata chapter 7 — Bruno Dagens' Sanskrit–English edition (IGNCA / Motilal).
- Viśvakarma Prakāśa — Khemraj Shrikrishnadas, with Hindi commentary.
- Mānasāra chapter 7 (P. K. Acharya) · Agni Purāṇa chapter 93 · Rājavallabha (Maṇḍana Sūtradhāra) chapter 1.
For Aditi, Diti, the Ādityas and the Rudras: Śrīmad Bhāgavata 6.6, 6.18 and 3.12; Ṛgveda 10.72 and 2.27; Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.15 and 1.21.
How to use this chapter
- Find the power behind the area of life that is troubling you in the table — no customers coming, look at Bhallat (N4); decisions never getting made, Jayant (E3).
- Then find that pada on your plan — the Vastu Grid tool lays the 45-devta grid over a floor plan.
- What to keep there and what to remove: read that devta's page on the 45 devta hub, or take a consultation.
- The full list as a direction-wise table: 45 Vastu Devta Chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these powers of the 45 Vastu devtas written in scripture?
The devtas' names and places are in the Bṛhat Saṁhitā (Vāstuvidyā chapter) and the Matsya Purāṇa (chapter 253). Job names such as 'Visionary' or 'Merchandiser' are the interpretation of modern Vastu teaching — useful hints, not the words of the texts.
Which is the original Sanskrit book for the 45 Vastu devtas?
The Vāstuvidyā chapter of Varāhamihira's Bṛhat Saṁhitā gives the oldest complete list. For more detail read King Bhoja's Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra (chapters 11–14) and the Matsya Purāṇa (chapters 252–257).
Are the 45 Vastu devtas the 12 Ādityas, 11 Rudras, 8 Vasus and the asuras?
That grouping appears in modern charts, but it does not fully match the scriptural list of the twelve Ādityas (Bhāgavata 6.6) — Yama and Mukhya are not Ādityas, and Ādityas such as Bhaga, Tvaṣṭā and Dhātā are not on the mandala. Take it as a hint.
Are the Rudras sons of Diti?
No. From the pieces into which Indra cut Diti's embryo came the 49 Maruts (Bhāgavata 6.18, Rāmāyaṇa Bāla-kāṇḍa 46–47). The eleven Rudras come from the crying child born of Brahmā's brow (Bhāgavata 3.12).
